Advanced Math Pathways

Celina ISD’s mathematics courses are designed to develop students’ mathematical thinking processes through the study of the Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills (TEKS) for each grade level. Some students may be prepared to study mathematics at an accelerated rate. Celina’s advanced mathematics courses in middle school provide students with two pathways that both enrich and accelerate instruction.

Pathway One: Honors Math 6 and 7 cover three years of mathematics TEKS in two years. This pathway prepares students to enroll in High School Algebra 1 as an 8th grader.

Pathway Two: Accelerated Math 6 and 7 cover four years of mathematics TEKS in two years. This pathway prepares students to enroll in High School Algebra 1 as a 7th grader and High School Geometry as an 8th grader.

What are the advanced math pathways?

We offer three math pathways starting in 6th grade to prepare students for advanced high school math courses:

Traditional Pathway: Designed for all students, this pathway covers grade-level math standards as outlined by the state.
Honors Pathway: This accelerated pathway compresses three years of math into two years, enabling students to take Algebra 1 in 8th grade.
Accelerated Pathway: This highly advanced option compresses four years of math into two years, allowing students to complete Geometry by the end of 8th grade.

Note: Algebra 1 and Geometry are high school credit courses, but they do not count toward a student’s high school GPA.

How does my student enroll in advanced math pathways, and what are the recommended qualifications?

Students are automatically placed into the Honors Pathway if they meet the following criteria:

MAP Middle of Year (MOY) score: 78th percentile or higher in 5th grade.
STAAR score: 60th percentile or higher in 5th grade.

Parents can opt out of this placement if desired. If students do not meet these criteria but would still like to enroll, they can discuss options with their teacher and/or school counselor to determine the best path forward.

Enrollment in the Accelerated Pathway requires:

MAP MOY score: 94th percentile or higher in 5th grade.
STAAR performance: "Masters" level in 5th grade.

If a student is on the Traditional Pathway and wants to enroll in Honors the next school year, what are the requirements?

Students must demonstrate mastery of all relevant grade-level standards to transition into Honors or Accelerated courses. This ensures there are no learning gaps and that the student is prepared for the fast-paced curriculum. If this is something the student would like to pursue, they should notify their math teacher and/or school counselor to receive information on how to demonstrate their mastery.

What do advanced courses look like?

Math 6 Honors: Covers 6th-grade math and half of the 7th-grade math standards. Classes are 45 minutes daily, requiring high engagement and consistent effort.
Math 6 Accelerated: Covers all 6th- and 7th-grade standards. Due to the fast pace, students may need additional study time outside of class.
Math 7 Honors: Covers half of 7th-grade standards and all 8th-grade math standards. The pace remains quick, demanding strong commitment.
Math 7 Accelerated: Covers all 8th-grade math and Algebra 1 standards. This course is foundational for high school math and requires significant effort, including out-of-class study.
Algebra 1: A high school credit course that introduces key concepts used throughout advanced math courses. (Does not factor into high school GPA.)
Geometry: A high school credit course focusing on spatial reasoning and geometric concepts. (Does not factor into high school GPA.)
