Exam for Acceleration

General District Procedures

  1. General Information
    1. Celina ISD will provide Credit by Exams and will provide a published calendar with available testing windows provided during each quarter. The district has established the testing for grades K-12 in accordance with board policy.
    2. Celina ISD will administer State approved examinations in grades 1-12. A student may only take a maximum of two tests per day.
    3. Applications for examination for Credit by Examination must be submitted in accordance with the published testing calendar.
    4. Dates are published on the district website.
  2. Assessment Policies (for Acceleration)
    1. A student may earn credit for an academic subject in which he/she has had no prior instruction. The student must earn a score of 80% or higher on a board-approved examination for the applicable course. The school district must enter the earned score on the student’s transcript.
    2. If an application is submitted and a test is ordered, the test must be administered to the student or a fee will be collected from the family to reimburse the cost of the exam.
    3. If a student successfully earns credit and is being taken for acceleration purposes, placement in a new course will only take place at the start of the school year (or semester for semester courses) regardless of when the exam is taken.
    4. A student may not attempt to earn credit by examination for a specific high school course more than two times.
    5. Any course in which a student earns by CBE will not be counted in GPA calculation nor awarded weighted credit.
  3. Exam for Credit Retrieval (with prior instruction)
    1. Students must demonstrate a mastery of  70% or higher on a CBE to earn credit.

Acceleration Considerations

  1. Students are strongly encouraged to review admission requirements for universities prior to choosing the credit by exam option. Students who may be potential candidates for athletics scholarships are advised that credits earned through the above method may not qualify for minimum core course requirements under NCAA guidelines
  2. Teacher/Counselor recommendations regarding your student should be considered as they can provide additional information regarding whether or not an exam for acceleration would be an appropriate option for your student.
  3. In some situations, accelerating early may put your student at risk for limited course options during their junior or senior year of high school. Make sure you have mapped out a clear course plan based on the district's course offerings.
  4. (Secondary Only) If a needed core course is not offered in our middle school course guide, your student will have to take the course through an online platform provided by Celina ISD. If your student needs to take an elective course that is not offered in the middle school course guide, a correspondence course can be taken but needs approval from your campus counselor prior to enrolling. This correspondence course will not be paid for by the district. Correspondence courses will not be calculated into a student’s GPA.
