CMS Boys Athletics:
Below is a message from Coach Davis regarding Boys Athletics. There are so many details below – important dates, times, etc – so please read through it! There has been a problem with Messenger but I know he is hoping to get this out to emails too.
6th Graders – this does not pertain to you in Pre-Athletics. You will get details on first day of school (no workout first day). FYI, there are several classes of Pre-Athletics, not one period like grades 7/8.
From Coach Davis…
Hello there, welcome or welcome back—whichever fits you. I know this may be sent out to more than the parents of Middle School football players. I apologize for that but rolled the dice and cast a big net to make sure the information gets to the correct people.
Middle School football, cross country, and off season time is fast approaching. Here are a few pieces of information which we hope helps you out as we begin the season:
8th Grade Football Coaches
7th Grade Football Coaches
Off-Season – Landon DeMasters
Cross Country – Loretta Francis
Times for workouts:
▶Football – Locker rooms will open at 5:45 a.m. Practice begins at 6:15 a.m., on the field ready to go. QB’s and receivers will start throwing and catching earlier. These times are every day, which means game day or the day after a game.
▶Off-season – Gym opens at 7:30 a.m.. Practice begins at 7:45.
▶Cross country – Practices begin at 6:30 a.m. **** Official practices will not start until August 30, so those boys will go to off-season until then. Practices will probably be over in an hour or so which means the boys will go to off-season after they complete their morning cross country workout.
**We will pass out football equipment Monday, August 16. The 8th grade from 5:00 to 6:00 p.m. and the 7th from 6:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. If you can’t make that day, no worries. We will get equipment issued before or after those first few days of practice. We have excellent helmets, shoulder pads, and pants but if you wish to purchase your own, please bring it so a coach can check for proper fit and UIL acceptability.
➡The first day of school – please drop all first period athletes off at the field house before 8:00 a.m. This helps traffic on that day. We will take the boys over when needed at the middle school. We will not workout on the first day, so they should come dressed ready for school.
**Breakfast – we will finish workouts in time for boys to shower and get to the cafeteria in time for some breakfast. They must shower and change in a timely manner for that to happen. Dollar General is off limits, don’t even think about it.
**After school – 3:45 p.m. – 4:20 p.m. – All boys can come to the fieldhouse and pick up their athletic bag and gear if it needs to be taken home. 8th grade will lift weights on Monday and Thursday, while 7th grade skill players will work skills on the field. 7th grade will have the weight room on Wednesday and 8th grade skill players will work skills on the field. Linemen from both grades can work out all 3 days if they want. Players will be supervised. We ask that you pick up your athlete by 4:25.
**We have a five day acclimation period in football in which helmets will be the only pads worn. If your athlete starts late and/or misses a day they will still have to complete 5 days. Participation in workout also requires a UIL physical on file with our trainers.
**Evaluation for A and B teams will commence on the first day of school. Finalization of teams probably won’t be complete until 2 or 3 days in pads have been completed. Determination of teams is predicated on finding the most playing time for each individual. Please notice that the second week the 8th grade has 3 games. Right now one team will play Anna’s A team, one team will play Liberty Christian’s A team, and another team will play Anna’s combined ⅞ B team. There may be some 7th graders play versus that Anna ⅞ team. Our 7th A team will play Anna’s A team and our B team will play Liberty Christian’s A team. That week there may be players play on teams which will just be for that week. We will let the players know as soon as we know who will play where.
**Workout attire – Athletes are expected to wear orange, white, or gray apparel. Cleats, and shoes are the exception. For football socks must be at least crew length, no short socks.
**Athletic Code of Conduct – https://www.celinaisd.com/documents-and-forms-athletics/ This document contains expectations for Bobcat athletes. Please pay close attention to the grooming guidelines pertaining to head hair and facial hair. Luckily I’ve only seen one 8th grader that has anything resembling facial hair and the one 7th grader who said he shaves will probably be good until 2022 if he shaves tonight.
**Expectations for success in the academic area are extremely high for Bobcat athletes. Our athletes should exhibit extraordinarily proper behavior and effort in the academic part of their middle school experience. We will continually remind, monitor, and attempt to correct any situations in which these expectations are not met.
We look forward to working with your athlete. Being involved in athletics can be such a great character building process and we are honored to be a part of that. My email address is email@example.com. I have from 8:45 – 9:00 am and after 3:00 pm as times to communicate with you regarding any issues or questions you might have concerning our athletics. Our coaching staff loves to win games, but we want to do that in a manner that promotes sportsmanship, trust, and commitment to our team in the greatest “Bobcat Way” possible. I am sure there is something I am forgetting, and that is ok because I did graduate from high school during the Bicentennial Year, so I’m allowed a few mistakes. What I missed, we will catch up later. We are looking forward to a great year and please don’t hesitate to ask any questions you have.
